PHARM. IBUKUN OGUNDEJI ELUCIDATED ON SIDE-EFFECT OF MEDICATION

Health is wealth for those who cherish life and appreciate social intelligence. Meanwhile, some people pursuit money or wealth and neglect the importance of their health. Of course, they got the money and loss their health which probably money may not buy back.

Therefore  JBN correspondent engaged Pharmacist Ibukun Ogundeji, the  CEO, Odeji Pharmacy and Store in an interview on a subject “side effect of mediation” which is one of the factors for the healthcare impediment in Nigeria communities.

Despite the fact that most of the companies producing the drugs carried out intensive scientific research before they push the medication into the market for sale, yet factor of human error and climate change probably affect the end result of those medications. Changes in body metabolism can also affect how the body reacts to the chemical elements of the medication,

Mrs Ibukun Ogundeji explained further “we still experience side-effect of medication because the makeup of medication itself is a combination of many things and that is why we feel that orthodox drug, that means our normal drug in the pharmacy, in most time safer, because in productions, the component undergo several process to extra chemicals that are injurious to the body”

Nevertheless, side effect of medication is peculiar to an individual, Pharm. Ogundeji make us understood that some people may take a medication and has headache, nausea, itching, diarria even vomiting, “all these might be under side effect likewise an individual may take the same drug without any side effect…what is harmful has been taking away”

Meanwhile, side-effect of medication can happen at any point in life. The drug someone has been using for long without side effect could suddenly turns otherwise and the person can be having side-effect using the same medication. Mrs Ibukun threw more light on the cause and narrow it down to, How the drug is been taken, that is dosage if a twelve hourly drug is prescribe but you said it’s just morning and night without pay attention to the twelve hour prescribe in such situation they person might have side effect”

Continued, “also in some situation, the person might feel that the fever is so high and instead of taken two tablet it took more than two tablets, this is drug abuse! most likely you might experience side effect”

 In some cases pharmacist would say “better use after food”, but you eat around 8 O’clock in the morning and take the drug around 2 O’clock in the after, the person may have side effect. She established “we cannot totally eradicate the side effect of almost everything not only medication that has side effect, the good news is that, it can be reduced and control”

She also established that change in physiological  state  can trigger side effect of medication.”I know of a friend that took anti-malaria which she had not be taking for past 20years and result in a serious body itching” As we grow in age our body system changes and makes us prone to side effect of medication.

Pharmacist Ibukun Ogundeji advised that immediately someone take a medication and the person start having side effect that is not bearable quickly consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Mrs Ibukun Ogundeji advised “Although there are some side effect that is bearable, which can be manages for instant headache you can take pain relieve and you are okay, continue with the drug”. But if you take a medication and you start vomiting profusely, don’t sit at home quickly go to your doctor or see a qualified pharmacist.”

In conclusion we cannot totally eradicate side effect of medication but we can take precautions and consult qualified healthcare personnel instead of self-medication. Your health is too important to be traded for wealth. Engage the professionalism of medical practitioners. Unless you are healthy, you can enjoy the dividend of good living.
